Care compatriote e cari compatrioti,
L'inizio del nuovo anno scolastico annuncia per molti di noi la fine della pausa estiva. Di solito questo significa tornare alla nostra routine e affrontare gli ultimi mesi dell'anno con fresca energia e vigore. Quest'anno è un po' diverso. Dobbiamo continuare ad adattarci alle nuove circostanze e ridisegnare di conseguenza la nostra vita quotidiana. Per alcuni, questo significa conciliare le sfide della scuola a domicilio con i numerosi obblighi professionali e personali. Ma anche le famiglie con bambini che tornano a scuola devono adeguarsi alle diverse norme di sicurezza introdotte a causa della pandemia. Cogliamo l'occasione per esprimere il nostro apprezzamento per il lavoro che svolgete ogni giorno in queste difficili circostanze.
Sebbene la vita pubblica stia lentamente riprendendo, l'auspicata inversione di tendenza dopo la pausa estiva purtroppo non si è concretizzata. La pandemia sarà con noi anche nei prossimi mesi. Fortunatamente, però, troviamo sempre il modo di affrontarla meglio. Nonostante il numero di casi sia di nuovo in aumento, solo poche persone soccombono ormai alle conseguenze di COVID-19. Ciò dimostra che i trattamenti offerti dalle strutture mediche locali funzionano e che sono in grado di far fronte a questa enorme pressione. Vi chiediamo tuttavia di continuare a prendere sul serio questa pandemia e di fare la vostra parte per contenere il nuovo coronavirus. Seguite sempre le regole delle autorità locali e le norme igieniche generali e fate attenzione quando vi trovate in luoghi affollati.
Queste circostanze richiedono che l'Ambasciata e il Consolato Generale si adattino costantemente e si dotino di nuovi strumenti di lavoro. Nel prossimo futuro, quindi, manterremo le regole sulla distanza introdotte negli ultimi mesi. Tanto più che finora hanno funzionato molto bene e siamo sempre restati pienamente operativi anche durante la fase più difficile della pandemia. Andando avanti, dobbiamo pensare attentamente a come svolgeremo le nostre attività. La risposta positiva alla celebrazione digitale del primo di agosto www.missione1agosto.org ha dimostrato che iniziative di questo tipo sono accolte favorevolmente da gran parte degli svizzeri, sia in Svizzera che all'estero. Abbiamo molto apprezzato la vostra partecipazione e il grande entusiasmo per questa campagna e ci rallegriamo di organizzare altri eventi digitali di questo tipo in futuro.
Infine, vorrei ringraziarvi personalmente per un primo anno entusiasmante e istruttivo qui ad Abu Dhabi. Mai nella mia carriera ho vissuto una svolta così drammatica come l'inizio della pandemia della scorsa primavera. Grazie all'ottimismo e alla flessibilità della comunità svizzera nonché alla reattività delle autorità locali, non ho mai avuto la sensazione di non poter adempiere al mio mandato. Al contrario, questa esperienza mi ha mostrato quanto sia importante avere un legame diretto con i nostri concittadini e quanto possa essere forte il nostro senso di comunità in questi tempi difficili.

La rentrée scolaire annonce la fin des vacances d'été pour beaucoup d'entre nous. Normalement, cela signifie le retour à la routine habituelle et affronter les derniers mois de l'année avec une énergie et un vigueur renouvelés. Cette année, c'est un peu différent. Nous devons continuer à nous adapter aux nouvelles circonstances et réorganiser notre vie quotidienne en conséquence. Pour certains, cela signifie concilier les défis de l'enseignement à domicile avec les nombreuses obligations professionnelles et privées. Mais les familles dont les enfants retournent à l'école doivent également s'adapter aux différentes règles de sécurité introduites à la suite de la pandémie actuelle. Nous aimerions profiter de cette occasion pour vous exprimer notre reconnaissance pour le travail que vous faites chaque jour dans ces circonstances difficiles.
Bien que la vie publique reprenne lentement, le changement espéré après la pause estivale ne s'est malheureusement pas concrétisé. La pandémie nous accompagnera aussi dans les mois à venir. Heureusement, nous trouvons constamment des moyens de mieux y faire face. Même si le nombre de cas augmente à nouveau, seules peu de personnes succombent aujourd'hui aux conséquences du COVID-19. Cela montre que les traitements proposés par les structures médicales locales fonctionnent et qu'elles sont capables de faire face à cette énorme pression. Néanmoins, nous vous demandons de continuer à prendre cette pandémie au sérieux et d'apporter votre contribution à l'endiguement du nouveau coronavirus. Veuillez continuer à suivre les règles des autorités locales ainsi que les règles générales d'hygiène et restez prudents lorsque vous vous trouvez dans des endroits où il y a beaucoup de monde.
Ces circonstances exigent également que l'Ambassade et le Consulat Général s'adaptent en permanence et se dotent de nouveaux outils de travail. Nous maintiendrons ainsi dans un avenir proche les règles de distance introduites ces derniers mois. D'autant plus que cela a très bien fonctionné jusqu'à présent et que nous avons toujours été pleinement opérationnels, même pendant la phase la plus difficile de la pandémie. À l'avenir, nous devons réfléchir soigneusement à la manière dont nous allons mener nos activités. La réaction positive à la célébration numérique du 1er août www.missione1agosto.org a montré que de telles initiatives sont bien accueillies par une grande partie des Suisses, tant en Suisse qu'à l'étranger. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié votre participation et le grand enthousiasme pour cette campagne et nous nous réjouissons d'organiser d'autres événements numériques de ce type à l'avenir.
Enfin, je voudrais vous remercier personnellement pour cette première année passionnante et instructive pour moi à Abu Dhabi. Jamais dans ma carrière je n'ai vécu une rupture aussi dramatique que le début de la pandémie ce printemps. Cependant, grâce à l'optimisme et à l'adaptabilité de la communauté suisse, ainsi qu’à la réactivité de notre pays hôte, je n'ai jamais eu le sentiment de ne pas pouvoir remplir mon mandat. Au contraire, cette expérience m'a montré combien il est important d'avoir un lien direct avec nos concitoyens et combien notre sens de la communauté peut être fort en ces temps difficiles.

Liebe Mitbürgerinnen und Mitbürger
Der Beginn des neuen Schuljahres läutet für viele von uns das Ende der Sommerpause ein. Normalerweise heisst dies, in die gewohnte Routine zurückzukehren und die letzten Monate des Jahres mit frischem Elan und voller Tatendrang anzugehen. Dieses Jahr ist es etwas anders. Wir müssen uns weiter an die neuen Gegebenheiten anpassen und dementsprechend den Alltag wieder neugestalten. Für einige heisst dies, die Herausforderungen des Heimunterrichts mit den zahlreichen beruflichen und privaten Verpflichtungen in Einklang zu bringen. Doch auch diejenigen Familien, deren Kinder erneut in den Unterricht gehen, müssen sich auf die verschiedenen Sicherheitsbestimmungen einstellen, die aufgrund der anhaltenden Pandemie eingeführt wurden. Wir möchten diese Gelegenheit nutzen, um Ihnen unsere Wertschätzung für den Einsatz auszudrücken, den Sie unter diesen erschwerten Umständen tagtäglich leisten.
Obwohl das öffentliche Leben vorsichtig wieder an Fahrt aufnimmt, ist die erhoffte Wende nach der Sommerpause leider ausgeblieben. Die Pandemie wird uns also auch in den kommenden Monaten begleiten. Glücklicherweise finden wir jedoch laufend einen besseren Umgang damit. Denn obwohl die Fallzahlen wieder steigen, erliegen etwa nur noch wenige Menschen den Folgen einer COVID-19-Erkrankung. Dies zeigt, dass die Behandlungen der lokalen medizinischen Einrichtungen greifen und sie diesem enormen Druck gewachsen sind. Wir bitten Sie dennoch, diese Pandemie weiterhin ernst zu nehmen und ihren Beitrag zur Eindämmung des neuen Coronavirus zu leisten. Bitte befolgen Sie daher stets die Bestimmungen der lokalen Behörden sowie die allgemeinen Hygieneregeln und seien Sie vorsichtig, wenn Sie sich an Orten mit vielen Menschen aufhalten.
Auch für die Botschaft und das Generalkonsulat erfordern die Umstände eine kontinuierliche Anpassung ihrer Arbeitsweisen. Die in den letzten Monaten eingeführten Abstandsregeln werden wir in nächster Zeit beibehalten. Zumal dies bisher sehr gut funktioniert hat und wir auch während der schwierigsten Phase der Pandemie immer voll einsatzfähig waren. Ebenso muss in Zukunft vorsichtig evaluiert werden, in welcher Form wir unsere Aktivitäten durchführen werden. Das positive Echo auf die digitale Erstaugustfeier www.missione1agosto.org hat gezeigt, dass solche Initiativen von einem grossen Teil der Schweizerinnen und Schweizer im In- und Ausland begrüsst werden. Wir haben Ihre Teilnahme und den grossen Enthusiasmus für diese Aktion enorm geschätzt, und freuen uns, in Zukunft vermehrt solche digitalen Events zu organisieren.
Zum Abschluss möchte ich mich noch persönlich für ein erstes, spannendes und lehrreiches Jahr hier in Abu Dhabi bedanken. Ich habe wohl kaum einmal in meiner Karriere eine solch einschneidende Zäsur erlebt wie den Anfang der Pandemie im letzten Frühjahr. Dank des Optimismus und der Anpassungsfähigkeit der Schweizer Gemeinschaft sowie der Reaktivität unseres Gastlandes hatte ich jedoch nie das Gefühl, meinem Mandat nicht gerecht werden zu können. Im Gegenteil hat mir gerade diese Erfahrung gezeigt, wie wichtig es ist, einen direkten Draht zu unseren Mitbürgerinnen und Mitbürgern zu haben, und wie stark unser Gemeinschaftsgefühl in solch schwierigen Zeiten sein kann.

Dear fellow Swiss citizens,
The beginning of the new school year heralds the end of the summer break for many of us. Usually, this means returning to our regular routine and approaching the last months of the year with fresh vigor and renewed drive. This year it's a little different. We have to continue to adapt to the new circumstances and once again redesign our everyday life accordingly. For some, this means balancing the challenges of home schooling with one’s many professional and personal obligations. But even those families whose children are going to school again have to adapt to the safety regulations that have been introduced due to the ongoing pandemic. We would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the effort you make every day under these difficult circumstances.
Although the public life is cautiously picking up again, the hoped-for turnaround after the summer break has not come about. The pandemic will, therefore, stay with us for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, however, we are constantly developing better ways to handle it and although the number of cases has been rising again, only few people succumb to the consequences of COVID-19. This tells us that the treatments of the local medical institutions are effective and that they are up to the task of dealing with this enormous pressure. Nevertheless, we ask you to continue to take this pandemic seriously and to do your part to contain the novel coronavirus. Therefore, please always follow the regulations of the local authorities as well as the general hygiene rules and be careful when you are in crowded places.
For the Embassy and the Consulate General, too, these circumstances require a steady adjustment of their working methods. We will keep following the social distancing rules introduced in the past months. Especially since this has worked very well so far and we were consistently fully operational, even during the most difficult phase of the pandemic. Going forward, we must also carefully evaluate in what form we will carry out our activities. The positive response to the digital first of August celebration www.missione1agosto.org has demonstrated that such initiatives are welcomed by a large proportion of the Swiss at home and abroad. We greatly appreciated your participation and the great enthusiasm for this campaign, and look forward to organizing more digital events in the future.
Finally, I would like to personally thank you for an exciting and instructive first year here in Abu Dhabi. I have hardly ever experienced such a disruption in my career, as during the start of the pandemic last spring. Thanks to the optimism and adaptability of the Swiss community as well as the reactivity of our host country, I, however, never had the feeling that I could not fulfill my mandate. On the contrary, this experience showed me how important it is to have a direct line of communication to our fellow citizens and how strong our sense of community can be in such difficult times.
I wish you a good start into the second half of the year!
